Swiss UAV took part in the second phase of a research project on the Validation of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Integration into the Airspace (VUSIL). The second phase clearly built on the successes of the first phase. The project itself is lead by the German Air Navigation Service Provider (DFS Deutsche Flugsicherung GmbH).
The task of the second phase was to test the ability of unmanned and manned aircraft to sense and avoid. Swiss UAV participated with its NEO S-300 series UAV and successfully equipped the aircraft with a standard Mode-S transponder. Based on the compilation and analysis of live radar data the UAV was able to detect the intrusion of a manned aircraft into its flight path and avoid any possible collision. The operator was able to gain a clearer picture and understanding of the UAVs movements within the crowded airspace.
Swiss UAV is very positive about the outcome of this project phase. These efforts are seen as a step towards the much anticipated opening of civil airspace for UAVs. Swiss UAV will continue to expedite and support this process.
